U MATTER – Project for Spark Awards: Experience Design Competition
For someone, words of encouragement as well as affirmation are what keeps them alive and loved. Therefore, we wrote down encouraging and positive words on our handmade letters to be hung on the petals of the lotus. This is one of the interactive aspects where public are given the chance to read through the letter.
Our white card model that showcases our final installation. This was derived after our black card model where we adjusted what we think was not feasible. E.g., height of the risers, size of the petals, etc. We had a scaled down cut-out of an actual person which helped us if we needed to increase / decrease the size of other elements.
As part of our interactive installation, we smoothen out the edges of the broken plates with sandpaper to make it safer for the public to interact with.
Testing out to see the placement of the fairy lights. E.g., where does the cable run around the lotus and where will the fairy lights drop from.
This was our first time testing all the lighting element we had envisioned for the installation. We played around with the colours and patterns to see what fits best. For example, we tried to go for all blues, but it looked flat hence we tried for a pastel yellow and pink.
Drawing cracking designs on the Lilypad to symbolize more of the “kintsugi” designs from the Japanese Pottery. We wanted it to be more connected with the props that will be placed on the Lilypad which is the broken plates.
This is the finished look of the handmade letters that we had written down with the encouraging and positive words. We hung this on the petal of the lotus to allow the public to be given the chance to read and interact with the letters.

PROJECT INFO:
U MATTER is an interactive installation with the purpose of creating an eye-opening perspective on mental health and overcoming the prejudice against it. Our team worked on the Production Design using a combination of lighting, sound, set and interaction to create this installation with the aim to increase awareness on the concerning rate of mental health illness due to Covid-19. We also hope to create a sense of empathy, compassion, mindfulness and inclusivity in the visitors who visit our installation.
