Event Preparation — Prototype-making

In this image, one of our team members, Huan Yi is creating one of our airplane launcher prototypes using materials such as cardboard, paper fasteners, and more.

The launcher is a tool that the participants used to launch paper airplanes in one of our 4 activities, '3, 2, 1: Let's Launch it Up!', where they learned about the 4 forces of flight by thinking critically about how an airplane flies, and more.
Event Preparation — Finalised Prototypes

In this image is the final version of the airplane launcher to be used for our activity. This launcher has undergone numerous tests, in which the team has modified and refined it to create the finalised airplane launcher, which is child-friendly and easy to use for 5 to 7-year-olds, our target audience age group.
Event Preparation — Set-Up Process

In this image, our team members, Joy, Sabrina, and Rebecca are conducting a last run-through of the event after setting up in Kewalram Chanrai Arts Centre (KCAC), with our logistics in place in preparation for the event.
Event Activity — 'Whoosh! Keep the Feather Up!'

In this image, one of our participants is partaking in our first event activity, 'Whoosh! Keep the Feather Up!'.

The goal of this activity is to have the participants return a raven's lost feathers back to it by using their entire body to mimic the way a feather would move, specifically making light and slow movements as they make their way to the raven.
Event Activity — '3, 2, 1: Let's Launch it Up!'

In this image, the participants are folding paper airplanes, guided by our 2 emcees, Huan Yi and Rebecca in our event activity, '3, 2, 1: Let's Launch it Up!'.

The goal of this activity is to have the participants launch a regular paper airplane in the first round, and a cardboard one in the second, allowing them to think critically about which airplane flies further, and more.
Event Activity — '3, 2, 1: Let's Launch it Up!'

In this image, one of the participants is preparing to launch a paper airplane in the event activity, '3, 2, 1: Let's Launch it Up!'</em using the airplane launcher the team had created.

After the participants have launched their airplanes in each round, they used their feet, where the number of footsteps they took represented the flight distance of their airplanes.
Event Activity — '3, 2, 1: Let's Launch it Up!'

In this image, the participants are attaching cardboard pieces to the wings of their paper airplanes in preparation for the second airplane launch round.

After the flight distance of their airplanes have been recorded for both rounds, they were asked thought-provoking questions such as "Which airplane flew further? Why?", and more as a way for them to learn the 4 forces of flight.
Event Activity — 'FLY HIGH with Poppy and Mo!'

In this image, our 2 emcees, Huan Yi and Rebecca are explaining how the event activity, 'FLY HIGH with Poppy and Mo!' will be conducted to the participants.

The goal of this activity is to have the participants complete a board game, where each board game space has a special flight-related mission that they have to attempt before proceeding to the next space.
Event — Welcoming of Audience

In this video, our 2 emcees, Huan Yi and Rebecca are conducting a singalong session with the participants before starting the event activities.

The song featured in this video is a revamped version of the 'If You're Happy and You Know It' children's song. The flight-related lyrics were created by Huan Yi, and refined by the rest of the team. The movement and gestures were also created by the team.
Event Activity — '3, 2, 1: Let's Launch it Up!'

In this video, one of our emcees, Huan Yi is explaining step-by-step how to fold a paper airplane to the participants.

Our other emcee, Rebecca was assisting one participant with the steps, while the rest of the team moved logistics for the following activity, 'FLY HIGH with Poppy and Mo!' accordingly without distracting the participants as much as possible.

PROJECT INFO:

FLY HIGH STEAM Education is an event based on the Singapore Repertory Theatre’s show, FLY HIGH. Our project's main aim was to teach aerodynamics − the four forces of flight (thrust, drag, lift & weight) to children from ages 5 to 7 using the STEAM Education learning approach and arts integration. We designed and planned a workshop that allows children to experience a journey through four flight-related activities as newly fledged pilots, where we utilised elements such as movement, drama & song so that the children could learn through play.
