The Woodland Lights (Set & Lighting)

This image depicts the whole team, with cast and crew as one, after our final show. This beautiful moment was captured along with the various elements that were seen in the show such as the wonderful costume and props, set design, and lighting states.
This photo was taken during one of our actual shows where the audience were able to interact with the different elements found in the play including interaction with the characters. These special moments showed us that everyone deserves to enjoy a fun theatrical performance, and that it is possible for the arts to adapt to the needs of various audiences.
In this image, one of our team members were operating the lighting console in the middle of the show by following the different cues. It also depicts the audience members being immersed in the performance, as the characters are seen interacting with them.
This photo showcases one of our many lighting states that can be seen in the production. The blend of colours from the lights, as well as, the colourful set pieces, forms a spectacular scenery and setting for the performance. Various sensory-friendly effects were also used for our lighting such as gobos and slow pulsing, to add depth in the environment.
This picture depicts the finalised version of the main moonflower set piece, complimented by the side-flats of vines. The design was constructed with the use of different pieces of fabric, to create the shape and shine of a magical moonflower.
This image shows the final version of the tree and also the bush. Most importantly the design of the trees as the trees are made from air ventilation ducts, which enabled us to pull it up or lower it down from the venue's catwalk, following what the director of the show wants it to be in certain scenes. Besides that, for the bushes, we used wooden cubes from past shows and shape them by pasting leaves to give it the look of a bush.
For this image, besides the trees and bush, there is also the side flats which are placed beside both sides of the moonflower which is the main flat. For the side flat, we also used the flats from previous shows and redesigned it by repainting and wrapping it with vines on it to give off an overgrown look, which would support the setting of a forest.
This image shows the musician's bush that is used for the musicians to sit on and perform during the show. The creation of the musician bush is similar to the other bushes where we add pasted leaves on to it to give it a bush look. The musician's cube is also longer as it allows for two musician to sit on it and perform as well.
This image shows the set model that we have created to visualise the final look and design of the event space based on the director's vision for the setting of the show. We created most of the set model pieces using foam-core piece which are soft enough to be cut and to shape it while also sturdy enough to be hold all of the set piece together. Besides that, we also made use of unused fabrics, papers and materials from The Atelier to do up other set pieces in the set model.
This video shows everyone in the team, cast and crew, putting our hands together for a hand-stack before a show. This act symbolises teamwork, showing that we are all in this together, and that we will all give it everything to make the show as good as can be. It also shows the harmony of all teams that come together to put up this production.

PROJECT INFO:

Our team worked on the scenic and lighting design for a multisensory production, “The Woodland Lights”, which was designed for neurodiverse audiences. We researched and sourced for sensory-friendly alternatives to replace various theatrical elements that may be a trigger to our audiences. By organising performances like this, we hope to create an accessible space that is fun, safe and inclusive for our target audience. We were glad to have performed to students from Rainbow Centre, Superhero Me as well as a mix of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) communities.
