Pre-Show Programmes for Gretel and Hansel (Industry Partner: Singapore Repertory Theatre)
A preview of what the website’s different pages (similar to a digital book) will look like on mobile devices. Consistent campaign colours and designs are used throughout the website, which is optimised for both desktop and mobile sizes. Fluid and subtle animations are used to create a responsive and lively feel, such as loading screens and micro-interactions. A child-lock will also be implemented to prevent children from external websites, for security and privacy reasons.
The website requires an account to sign in, which parents can help with. This account tracks their progression through the activities, allows them to upload and view each others’ artworks, accumulate “candies” to try their luck at winning attractive prizes including tickets to family programmes at SRT. We believe these will make the experience more gamified and immersive.

There are 3 sets of Arts and Crafts activities for the audience to choose from. They are Ice Cream Sticks Characters, Pencils Holder and Witch Hat - each subsequent activity increasing its difficulty to cater to children of different ages. Users are also able to earn their “candies” from completing these.
The example given above is Ice Cream Sticks Characters. One thing you will realise is we have deliberately chosen materials that can be found in everyday households. This will hopefully help children learn how to reuse materials and give them a new lease of life, instilling environmentally-friendly habits in them.
Our Virtual Gallery is a space allowing our audience of children (and parents) to post and share their artworks from the Arts and Crafts activities. Not only would this be on the website to share, there is a 3x1 aspect ratio screen in SRT's foyer that will project the children's artworks as well. Posting artworks in the gallery is only accessible to logged in users.
Users are to click on the box to upload their images. Once clicked, users can scroll through their mobile gallery to select the artwork they want to post. Once successful, they will then be able to view theirs and others' artworks.
Similarly to the Arts and Crafts activity, upon uploading their artworks, users will earn a few “candies” - points pushing them to have a chance to redeem a shot at the lucky box to win attractive prizes!
There are 3 levels of Spot It, each with different points awarded at the end. The media example given is our Intermediate level.
Users will be greeted by Hansel with instructions on how to play the activity. There will be 2 images displayed on the screen. Users will have to click on any of the images to find the difference. Whenever the user spots and clicks on the difference, a candy will light up on top of the image. Users will be able to go back to the home page by clicking on the back button available under the home button on the top left. One hint will be given for each activity and will be disabled once used.
For guest users. After they have found all differences, the page will automatically have a popup, to show that they have completed the activity and prompt them to login/sign up.
For logged in users, after finding all the differences, the page will automatically have a popup, to show that they have completed the activity. They can tap on “Get Candy” which will then lead them to the profile page to view how many candies they have collected.
The “candies” are referring to points which users can collect to have a chance at a lucky draw to win attractive prizes!- Our team has created 3 different Instagram AR filters to help engage children and their parents both pre and post show. Our decision was made because we researched that AR can help develop children's analytical, social interactions and motor skills. By having our AR filters on Instagram, they are more shareable, and it helps to promote SRT's Gretel and Hansel show to other parents as well. The filters can bring them to SRT's instagram page where there are other promotional posts and website to link the audience to.
The AR filters are as followed - Adventures of Gretel, Adventure of Hansel, and Gretel and Hansel Pop Quiz. Both Adventures of Gretel and Hansel follow a similar concept - collecting points via tilting of head and blinking, avoiding obstacles to reach a high score. This leaves choices between the two characters, and provides fun and engagement.
As for the Pop Quiz, it is a post-show engagement where the audience can test their knowledge after watching the show. Each recording of the filter comes with a randomised quiz and the audience are given two guesses in which after 5 seconds, the answer will be revealed.
- This Laughing Witch is a moving video with sound effects attached for the vertical screen right outside of SRT's theatre. Together with the decorations in SRT's foyer, it will help tremendously with ambient sound, creating an even more immersive experience for our audience. It also helps with recognition of the antagonist when they see her later on, and pique their interest going into the auditorium.
- To illustrate the antagonist and environment of the story, this looping animation shows Gretel and Hansel cowering from the Witch as she stirs her cauldron in the forest. Her shifting and menacing eyes, together with our protagonists’ fearful expressions set the scene for the dynamic between these characters in the theatre play.
While this is likely to be projected on the wall, it can be displayed on a screen as well. - The 4x3 aspect ratio screen is the huge screen that greets audiences when they step into SRT's foyer. In order to make it captivating, we used animations, sound effects, music and voice overs. The captions and audios - voices are used as a welcoming message, and context on the initially tense relationship between Gretel and Hansel to prepare our audience getting into the play.

Recipe game is unlocked after the theatre play, after our beloved characters escape safely from the Witch and return home. It reinforces learning outcomes of the play, while utilising gamification. A QR Code will appear at the end to bring them to this unlocked game on the website, as well as one for the Feedback Form.
The objective of the game is having Gretel and Hansel work together to bake a cake by choosing the right ingredients (every checkpoint offers 2 options, e.g. sugar is labelled ‘care’ and salt is labelled ‘jealousy’), with a 10s buffer before choosing an option. Understanding that some of the players may be as small as 3 years old, we made the game logic pick the correct answer by default when 10s have passed. This increases their chances of successfully baking the cake, while also having the autonomy to choose as they like and hopefully learn a new word or two.
There are reusable exploding oven animations followed by sad NPC interactions if wrong ingredients are chosen, whereby the player is encouraged to try again.
Once players have successfully chosen all the right ingredients, the cake will be seen in the oven through its glass. The cake will be placed in the centre of the table, where the mixing bowl once was and there will be happy Hansel and Gretel NPCs animations.
PROJECT INFO:
Our team enhanced Singapore Repertory Theatre’s audience engagement before their ‘Gretel and Hansel’ show. This was done by creating a gamified and engaging digital experience through a website filled with activities, an interactive video, Instagram Augmented Reality AR filters, and on-site screen graphics for the children and their parents to enjoy, even during these challenging times.
