Final Year Project Showcase

This is our hypothesis which kick starts our research.

The elderly are comfortable with their own ways of doing things, however these methods may become obsolete in the future. It is important for the elderly to update their technological skills or else they would just end up feeling increasingly lost and isolated as the rest of the world progresses digitally.

As user experience designers, we always prioritise inclusive design. For example, we say that we make buttons bigger so the elderly are able to see it. But, in the first place how would the elderly know what a button is? How would they know they are supposed to click on it? Without digital literacy, it does not matter how inclusive you make your design to be, the elderly would not know how to navigate it.

To prove whether our hypothesis is right, we used a digital interface as a case study. We will be using it to test and compare the differences between a good and bad interface, and how it affects digital literacy.

Our target users are Singaporean elderly aged 65 to 75. We gathered a total of 46 responses from online surveys and interviews. 

We chose a digital health application as healthcare is one of the elderly’s top priorities. From our research, we identified HealthHub as the most commonly used digital health platform in Singapore.

We gathered resources and featured the HealthHub application to conduct usability tests with our targeted users. 

According to our primary and secondary research findings, we identified key reasons why the elderly are reluctant to use digital services themselves. The main reasons include the lack of interest and independence as they rely on third parties like their children and grandchildren for help, and lastly fear of making mistakes.

With these key reasons in mind, we set out to create appealing solutions aimed at the elderly and solve the problems that we had identified.

 

Our solutions aim to give the elderly the adequate support that they need to take charge of their own learning. For those who are comfortable with digital interfaces they can use DigiLite.
