Mudskippers are known for their unusual looks and the interesting abilities they possess. Often mistaken as frogs or snakes crawling on muddy shores, they are actually fish that breathe through their gills. You might wonder how they survive out of water? Like how divers carry oxygen tank underwater, mudskippers carry tanks of water in its gill chambers to breathe on land! They can grow up to 30cm long and most of them are a brownish green color that range anywhere from dark to light. They can also breathe through their wet skin and build their homes using their mouths!

(Fun Fact) Mud lobster and its mud bunds:
There is an ecosystem within the mud bund. Can you guess what lives in there? Hint: Note the holes in the mud!
The holes in the mud are burrows of the mud lobster. These burrows are important features as it allows oxygen to reach the depths of the mud and silt. The silty mud in the swamp is so dense, no oxygen is able to get through the top layer into the lower layers of the mud. This causes everything below the immediate surface to die. It is also from the main burrow that many baby crabs create smaller branching tunnels as their homes.

Water is precious
This is a water well in Pulau Ubin. Some of the water in Pulau Ubin are drawn from dug well. Yes similar to the photo you see here, a big hole in the ground. Dug wells are found near the seashore. Water is forced into the well by pressure from the sea, that is why some well water taste slightly salty. Well water from dug wells are not potable as they are basically groundwater! When the well is left to dry, the pressure from the groundwater becomes too strong and more salt is let in. Can you imagine having a limited amount of water to use daily?

White bellied sea eagle:
The white bellied sea eagle is known to be Singapore’s largest common raptor or bird of prey. Their body can grow up to 60 to 70cm long. If we are lucky, we will be able to spot one soaring above us at Pulau Ubin.

Fiddler crab
A fiddler crab is also known as a calling crab.
Fiddlers prefer to live out of water on damp ground. Even when they are sealed in their burrows during high tide, they maintain a bubble of air underground! Notice that the male crabs have an enlarged claw. The claw can make up more than half of the crab's total body weight. The enlarged claw is used to attract the females and of course ward of male rivals! If the males end up in fights and lose their claw, the minor claw will grow into a major claw.

Nipa Palm aka attap seed tree:
Did you realise that the nipa palm does not have a trunk? The trunk is grown beneath the ground! Only the leaves and the flower stalk grow above the surface. The leaves can extend up to 9m in height. The flowers are a globular inflorescence of female flowers at the tip with catkin-like red or yellow male flowers on the lower branches. The flower produces woody nuts arranged in a globular cluster up to 25 cm across on a single stalk. When the ripe nuts separate from the ball, it floats away with the tide, occasionally germinating while still water-borne.

Weathered Rock Formations (Granite boulder) & Thomson Rock
[Charlie]: I remember grandpa saying that granite from Pulau Ubin, was used to build the Singapore-Johore causeway and even the Istana. I wonder if this big rock was part of a quarry that was located here?

Ohh look over there! That's a tree climbing crab grandpa told me about. I have always wanted to see one in the wild.
Fun Fact: The sides of their body have a structure with a net-like pattern that helps recirculate and oxygenate water in the gill chambers. In this way, these crabs can breathe air and stay out of the water for some time.

Return of the hornbills
Do you know that the Oriental Pied Hornbill(Anthracoceros albirostris convexus), once thought to be extinct in Singapore, has made a comeback?
This magnificent, large bird, distinguished by its large down-curved bill that is big and often brightly coloured, is one of possibly three hornbill species native to Singapore.
Helped by artificial nestboxes, which are put up as part of the Singapore Hornbill Project, it is re-establishing colonies in Singapore, with 40-50 of them found on Pulau Ubin.

The wayang stage you see here has a rich history. Besides being a Chinese opera stage where classical Teochew operas are performed, it was once a classroom for the kids of Ubin. Today, the stage is used mainly for celebrations of Tua Pek Kong's celestial birthday and the Chinese Seventh Lunar Month, or commonly known as Hungry Ghost Festival. The Chinese opera performances staged on the seventh month of the lunar calendar is believed to appease the roaming spirits so that the resident are not unnecessarily disturbed. In Ubin, these traditions are very much alive.

Pulau Ubin's original name is Pulau Batu, which means Granite Island in Malay. The island was once home to a community of 2000 residents. With the closure of granite quarrying activities, residents started to leave the island to seek new employment opportunities.
At present, there are less than a hundred residents living on the island. As you explore the main village, you will notice the many bicycle shops, eateries, drinks store and taxi-van services. These are mostly operated by the residents who rely on visitors as their main source of income.

Did you know this cute little creature can stay underwater for up to eight minutes in a single breath? This allows it to hunt successfully for fish, frogs, crabs and turtles.
There are currently an estimated number of 10 families of otters in Singapore, that sums up to about 70 wild otters in total.

Sluice Gates:
See how the sluice gates are standing on their own. These sluice gates used to be part of a bund system. Mud bunds were built to create pens for aqua farming of fish and shrimp. Farmers have long known of the suitability of the mangroves as a nursery. The sluice gate you see here is remnant of the farmers’ attempt to create controlled conditions in order to exploit the mangroves for aqua farming. These concrete structures are great reminders of how little we understand of nature. The bund walls were quick to collapse back into the sea when the mud lobster starts doing its job.

These are mangrove snails. They know when is the highest and lowest tide of the day and would start climbing up the tree one to two hours before the tide comes in. When low tide approaches, you will find them scattering on the ground to feed.

The Walking Tree
This is a red mangrove tree. A remarkable adaptation we see here are these “legs” also known as stilt roots. These stilt roots help to prop the tree steadily above the water and in soft muddy grounds. These roots have “pores” called lenticels which adapt to breathing air during low tide, and absorbing water at high tide.
Wetlands such as the one you are in are among the most productive habitats on earth. Like nature’s nursery, they provide shelter for fishes, crustaceans and shellfishes to hide from predators.

"Ice-kachang! This must be the palm that produces "attap chee" we find in ice-kachang. My favourite traditional dessert! Anyone else loves ice-kachang? For those who haven't had attap chee before, it is this sweet, translucent, jelly-like chewy seed that you can find in ice-kachang. If you are sharing it with someone else, be sure to look for it the first thing you dig your spoon into the mountain of ice! And if you are wondering why it is called attap chee and not attap seed - well they are technically the same. "Chee" is seed in most Chinese dialect."

Did you know there are slightly over 100 floating kelongs in the waters of Singapore?It is not easy for these fish farm businesses as they are subjected to alot of factors out of their control. For example plankton boom which results to all the fish to perish.
Unfortunately, these kelongs are out of bounds to tour groups as they only hold fish farms license. The only kelong that can be visited will be the Smith Marine floating restuarant.

"My Grandfather said that he had to carry buckets of water from the wells located outside of their house. He and his siblings took turns to be on water duty, he said it was hard work. Water was so precious to them especially on the hot and drier months. Look at us today, we get water with just a turn of the tap, we definitely take it for granted. Malayan monitor lizard, the scavenger of the mangrove swamps
Do not mistaken the monitor lizard for a crocodile.
The most common monitor lizard found in Singapore is the Malayan water monitor that can grow up to 3m long. Monitor lizards are mostly carnivorous; some also scavenge on carrion. It can be found in forests, mangrove swamps, and even man-made canals.

The Brahminy kite is a distinctive-looking bird with its rich chestnut brown body and wings, and white head and breast. In flight, its black wing tips and rounded tail base are visible. It calls with a high-pitched mew. Its size ranges from 44 to 52 cm. Juveniles are dark brown overall, with pale streaks on their underparts.

This heron is one of the common bird species you see along Pulau Ubin coastline. Can you guess the name of this bird? Hint - what colour is it predominantly?
That's right, it is called the Grey Heron!
It is common to catch sight of this majestic looking bird on Pulau Ubin. There used to be a huge nesting colony on the eastern part of the island. However due to human disturbance, the site was abandoned. Grey Herons favourite habitats are inland and coastal wetlands. Hence the mangroves habitat we are in right now makes a good resting, nesting and foraging site for them to feed on large fishes.
